The Mega Man Star Force series was one of my favorites on the Nintendo DS. This was another random pickup when I was a kid looking for new games at a game store. I had never heard of the series , but knew the name Mega Man. I obviously bought it and it was a good decision.

Brief Overview

The Mega Man Star Force series was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. This series came after the Battle Network series that concluded with Mega Man Battle Network 6. There were a total of three games, more if you count all the different versions. This series was released as part of Capcom’s 20th anniversary of Mega Man. The game play is really similar to the Battle Network series, with fights taking place on a grid. The main difference is that the POV has shifted. You’ll still select battle cards, just like in Battle Network, but the way you strategize might end up being a bit different. If there’s a demo at release I’d recommend playing it or watching some game play before buying becasue you may or may not like the changes from Battle Network to Star Force.

If you didn’t know I love this series, yes even the 2nd one. I honestly didn’t realize there was a 3rd one until years after it came out. I eventually played it, but it felt so obscure like it just wasn’t advertised at all or something. I was still a kid at the time so I remember always seeing commercials for upcoming games on TV, but I never saw anything about it. For so long I had wanted to see this series come back with a sequel or something and thought it would fade into obscurity. That was until the trailer appeared on Capcom’s YouTube channel. It was in the Nintendo Direct if you were watching the Nintendo Japan live stream, but none of the others for some reason.

Is there a Difference in the Versions?

This collection is like the Battle Network collection they released a few years ago. It contains all of the games in the series. It might be a bit confusing as Stat Force 1 had three versions. They are all the same game. The only difference is the transformation that you get. Here’s the breakdown, names abbreviated as MMSF just to shorten things a bit.

Mega Man Star Force 1:

  • MMSF Leo
  • MMSF Dragon
  • MMSF Pegasus

Mega Man Star Force 2

  • MMSF 2 Zerker×Ninja
  • MMSF 2 Zerker×Saurian

Mega Man Star Force 3

  • MMSF 3 Black Ace
  • MMSF 3 Red Joker

Like I mentioned it truly doesn’t matter which version of each that you choose. The story won’t change.

Online Play

I loved the online play for this game. It was definitely a highlight when you finished the story. The only downside was that cheating was rampant due to the action replay. With the action replay you could become invincible as well as access battle cards you shouldn’t have. I might honestly get Nintendo Online for a little bit just to experience it again when it comes out. I only hope that people will be able to have a normal experience.

Final Thoughts

I hope that this release paves the way for other games to be made into a collection, such as Mega-Man Legends. I haven’t played those games, but I know that there were a lot of people wanting those games instead. I think if we continue to support these collections from Capcom it can definitely happen in the future. As always thank you for reading!
