If you weren’t aware Pokémon day was on February 27th, where they showed a trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. I decided to write up some of my thoughts based on the trailer.

The Starters

We’ve officially gotten a look at the starters. Personally, I think I’ll be going with Totodile as my starter. The only issue I have with the starter selection is that two of them are from the same gen. I would have preferred them to have included a gen 3 or gen 4 starter, just so a different region is represented from each starter. I don’t think we’ll see new regional variants of their final evolution. Instead, I think they’ll each get a mega evolution.

Mega Evolution is Back

As you saw from the trailers, Mega Evolution is back. I always liked the Mega Evolutions. I definitely feel like we’ll be seeing some new ones, at least hopefully. Below are the current ones that have been shown by Nintendo, also confirming some Pokemon that’ll be in the game.

New Battle Mechanics

I think the most interesting thing from the trailer was the change in battle mechanics. Being able to reposition your Pokémon to dodge moves definitely opens up some room to be more strategic. One question I have about this is will NPC characters do something similar or will there Pokémon always be in the same position? Is this the set battle style or will it be changeable? I’ll definitely be looking forward to seeing more of this. The video will start right when the new battle mechanics are being shown.

Any Concerns

I think my biggest concern is will the environment be repetitive? We’re redeveloping the city, but are there other areas? I feel like if we’re confined within the city without other areas to go to, it might get a bit repetitive. Of course we’ve seen less than 4 minutes of game play so it’s hard to know if it’ll lean one way or the other at the moment. I’ll definitely be needing the next trailer to dive a bit more into this.

Lingering Questions

I think at this point the main lingering question I have is what time period is this taking place in? Legends Arceus was in the past so is Pokemon Legends: Z-A set in the future? Some of the stuff in the trailer looked pretty futuristic to me.

Conclusion

What did you all think about what we’ve been shown so far? Do you have any concerns? I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more, whenever they decide to show more game play. I’m going to guess that they’ll be aiming for a late October to mid November release date to coincide with holiday sales and potential Switch 2 release. As always thank you all for reading!

I definitely want to see more . And Chikorita will be my starter since she’s so cute . I don’t mind an urban setting , sometimes urban settings can be fun , look at Zenless and Yakuza , but I’m sure they’ll have a nice countryside to Kalos too

I'd definitely like to see more. I'd be more sold on the urban setting as long as each area has differences

yes totally ! I would love to see different parts of the city , like an industrial area full of steel and ground pokemon along with construction workers as well. Maybe that could be a theme of this game is how even in the city , pokemon are still needed . When Kalos was first announced as the region for the next Legends game I was honestly hoping for a futuristic setting and story . The Future variant pokemon in Violet and the alternate society in Ultra Sun and Moon have really hyped me up for a sci fi Pokemon story . Like can you imagine Pokemon with some cyberpunk elements ( obviously keep true to Pokemon’s core themes and values ).
