I previously talked about Sonic Rush and decided to also talk about it’s sequel, Sonic Rush Adventure. This is another great 2D Sonic game that I’d recommend.
What is Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Rush Adventure the sequel to Sonic Rush. It’s a 2D platforming game just like the previous game. Sonic and Blaze team up once again in a new adventure, facing new enemies. Sonic Rush Adventure released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS.
This game still follows the flow of the previous one, having two acts and a boss for each stage. One thing that’s different is how you get to stages. In the Sonic Rush Adventure, instead of moving from stage to stage, you’ll need to travel to new locations through the various vessels.
These vessels include a sailboat, a submarine, a water bike, and a hovercraft. Some locations can only be reached by a specific vessel. Though I like the different modes of transportation, it sometimes causes a bit of a slow down when playing. For each of these vessels you’ll have to build them and you’ll need certain material to do it. This leads to repeating stages in order to get the required material. It’s unavoidable as like I mentioned earlier, some destinations can only be reached by specific vessels. Just like the prequel you’ll need to get all the Chaos Emeralds and the Sol Emeralds to reach the true ending.
Some Changes from the Prequel
In this sequel you are still able to play as Sonic or Blaze. The only difference though is that they don’t have separate stories. When doing a stage you can choose who you want to play as. This also means that there aren’t any different mixes of stage themes. Another thing that has changed is how you obtain the Sol Emeralds and Chaos Emeralds. In the previous game, completing stages in Blaze’s story earned you a Sol Emerald. In Sonic Rush Adventure there are specific missions you need to do in order to obtain them. To obtain the Chaos Emeralds you’ll have to beat a character named Johnny in a series of races.
Like I mentioned previously, you’ll have to travel to explore new stages. Some of these stages will require you to craft a new vessel in order to get there. In order to craft the vessels there are various materials that you’ll have to gather.
Music
Just like the previous game, the music is pretty good. I do like the music from the first game just a bit better though. Below are some of my favorite tracks from the OST.
What Stood Out
One of the boss fights really stood out to me. It’s towards the end of the game, where Captain Whiskers and Johnny team up. What stood out was that you’re fighting both of them at the same time. Both enemies are on the screen and you can target whoever you want first. This fight once again makes perfect use of the dual screen. Another thing that stood out to me was how little Dr.Eggman and Eggman Nega were in the story. They really didn’t show up until the end and it made me wonder if the game would have been different without them.
My Thoughts
I think Sonic Rush Adventure is a good sequel and a good game. It continues the trend of the previous game making great use of the dual screens of the DS as well as making use of the touch screen. I do slightly like the first game better. Though I thought the vessels were cool, needing to gather material to craft them caused a bit of a slowdown. It does capture the adventure aspect of the game though, with you plotting a course and traveling there. I’d recommend playing it just like the first one. One thing to note is that I wouldn’t say it’s required to play the first one before playing this one. There is some dialogue that might not make sense if you didn’t play Sonic Rush, but for the most part I think you could play this one by itself.
Conclusion
What are your thoughts on Sonic Rush Adventure? Have you ever heard of it or played it? I think that this game as well as the previous one are some of the best 2D Sonic games that you’ll play. I really wish they’d remaster or remake these in some way. Truthfully I’d like a sequel, but that will most likely never happen. As always thank you all for reading!
