Swing into Action in Spider-Man Miles Morales

Spider Man Miles Morales puts us into the role of the new Webslinger for some amazing game play. This game truly made this a story about Miles and the people in his life. This will be a spoiler free review so if you have not played it yet you can still read this. I am reviewing the ps5 version of the game. Let’s start with the combat.

I didn’t think Insomniac could make the combat any better but they proved me wrong. Miles has venom powers that can be used for some devastating hits on enemies as well as dealing with large groups. This ability for Miles makes combat new and refreshing and more interesting. Miles also has the ability to turn invisible which makes sneaking up on enemies easier and allows you to momentarily catch your breath if you need to. The finishers are also different and show off how different Miles is from Peter as Spider-Man.

One of the finishers. Captured on ps5.

I do feel like the combat was more challenging than 2018 Spider-Man, but maybe I’m a little rusty. Let’s move on to the graphics.

You can play the game in two different modes, performance and fidelity. I played the game in performance mode which gives you 60fps. If you played in fidelity you would be in 30fps but you would have things like ray tracing. This game feels so smooth and looks fantastic. The swinging felt just as good, if not better than 2018 Spider-Man. The light pressure from the trigger contributes to this feeling. They went all out with the animation for Mile’s swinging. It’s unique and show that he’s still inexperienced when ti comes to swinging across the city. The cut scenes are phenomenal and has scenes that jump straight into game play as well. Moving on to the story.

I enjoyed the story that they crafted for Miles. As I mentioned earlier it truly is a story built around him and his journey to becoming his own hero. I was pleasantly surprised by how much they were able to do in such a short amount of time. As you go through the story you get to see Miles make mistakes as well as the struggles he faces while Peter is gone. They really made Miles feel like a true friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. This is shown through his interactions with characters as well as helping people through the app his friend Ganke which gives people a direct line to Spider-Man. I do feel as though the story kind of got rushed a little towards the end and it felt weird the amount of people that learned that Miles is Spider-Man. Now on to the positives.

I truly liked the swinging more than 2018 Spider-Man. The music they have for Miles while he is swinging is perfect. I liked the side missions a lot. You get to know the charters in Harlem, where Miles lives, and it feels more personal. The venom powers add some great flare to an already great combat system and really sets him apart from Peter. I like how you can jump straight to missions thanks to the capabilities of the ps5. For those of you that do not know, the ps5 lets players jump to certain portions of games to get certain achievements or do certain activities. I also like how they allow you to replay story missions as well as side missions. The photo mode is also just as enjoyable as 2018 Spider-Man, if not more. There are some of the negatives.

The first negatives are glitches I unfortunately came upon. At the time of me writing this the game has updated, but these were things I ran into while I did my play through. The first glitch I encountered was during the final boss. I was suddenly unable to hit them and shooting webs made them turn sideways and bug out. I have a video below illustrating this.

The next bug I encountered was after finishing the main story my web shooters disappeared. Even after deleting and reinstalling the game I still could not shoot webs at enemies. The only fix is replaying a mission that requires you to shoot webs at something, this forces the webs to reappear. Another negative was that things felt a little rushed at the end like they were running out of time and needed to cram the rest of what they wanted in. Other than that it was a good game.

My final verdict is that Spider-Man Miles Morales is a 8/10. Despite being an enjoyable game the glitches I encountered broke the pacing and were quite troublesome, mostly the missing web shooters. If you also played this game feel free to tell me how you felt about it. As always thank you for reading.
