The Amazing Game that is Devil May Cry 3

Devil May Cry 3 Title Screen

I recently finished Devil May Cry 3 and I thought it was a really good game. I liked that they decided to go with a prequel as they had a little more freedom with what they could do. Dante has a lot more personality in DMC 3 than the previous games. Bear in mind that my thoughts on this game are my opinion, not fact. If you would like to avoid spoilers you may skip to my score by clicking the conclusion link above. I would also recommend not watching the video if you want to experience the game for yourself.

The intro alone was hands down the best opening in the series, bear in mind when I bring up things like this I am comparing DMC 1, DMC 2, and DMC 3. You get thrown immediately into the action with some great music playing in the background to create a memorable first level. Below is a video of the introduction into the game and a video of the first level.

Story

The story was the the most enjoyable of the series so far. It was a huge improvement over DMC 2 because you learned key story details through the cut scenes and character interactions. You knew from the beginning that Dante was pursuing his brother Virgil who he hadn’t seen in a year. While climbing the tower he’s focused only on having fun, he doesn’t care what’s happening to the world around him. After he meets Mary, Dante calls her Lady because she does not like her name, that starts to change. I literally could not stop playing this game.

Weapons

The added animations when you get a new weapon, Devil Arms, gave the game more life as well as showed a brief preview of what attacking with these weapons would look like. My favorite Devil Arm was the guitar Nevan. I wasn’t all the great with using it but I thought it was a pretty cool weapon. I liked how each weapon was unique with their own abilities to upgrade. I also enjoyed the different styles that grant Dante different abilities. For example the Trickster style allowed Dante to do dashes that you can use to dodge attacks while the Swordmaster gives Dante more attack varieties. I will say that though I like they could of done them a little differently. They take a good amount of experience to level up and some seem more for fun the practical use. The Quicksilver style for example allows Dante to move faster than enemies and experiment with combos. I personally tried the style once and didn’t use it again. I mainly used Trickster and Swordmaster. I swapped the styles depending on the boss fight. Another downside of the styles is that you can only change them in the mission prep or at a Divinity statue.

Dislikes

Another thing that I did not like was the camera. Now that’s probably an unpopular opinion but I struggled with it sometimes. I hated not being able to control it a little more like looking up. It’s something so simple that I never realized that I would miss. Something that I thought was cool was being able to play as Vergil, but it turned to disappointment after finding out he didn’t have his own story. I though that he would based on the opening but you just play the same stages as you did as Dante.

Likes

One of my favorite parts of the game where the battles with Vergil. Each fight was different in some way or another. You would have to think of a new strategy each fight because he would have different attacks in each one. I also enjoyed the credits, as you still play the game while watching them. While the credits are scrolling down the screen you basically get a little mini game where you see how many enemies you can beat before the credits end. I’ve got a video below to show what it looks like.

Conclusion

In conclusion Devil May Cry 3 was an incredibly enjoyable game that I was glad to experience. This ranks as one of the best games I’ve played. The music, weapon selection, and characters create a memorable experience. I’ve basically gotten super invested into the Devil May Cry series now. Below is my rating. As usual thank you for reading.
