There were a lot of games I happened to stumble upon looking at the local used game store. I stumbled across one game that was intriguing. It was Mega Man X Command Mission.
Mega Man X Command Mission is a turn based RPG that was released for the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Game Cube in 2004. This game is a bit different from other games in the Mega Man X series since those games are platforming games. I first played this game on the Game Cube, but ended up finishing it years after I first played it.
Do I need to play other games?
You don’t really need to play any of the Mega Man X games to play Command Mission. I had only played the first Mega Man X game before this game. The story and villains are completely are new to this game. There are some characters you’ll recognize from other games, but but it’s mostly new ones. I definitely think it’s a game that Mega Man fans will enjoy as long as they go into it knowing that it’s a RPG. This game apparnelty happens in outside of the timeline of the main series.
Combat
As mention previously this is a turn based RPG. Battles mainly start from random encounters as you’re walking around each area. When a battle starts you’ll see turn order and health at the bottom right of the screen. Turn orders can change based on different statuses. For example, if you or an enemy is paralyzed you might end up going later. Parties are comprised of three characters and can be subbed out during battle. Given that it’s a RPG characters will gain experience and level up.
There is quite a bit that goes into the combat, with characters having access to different commands. Each character has a basic attack that they can do. Basic attacks don’t use any energy. Characters can use other attacks via sub weapons, which will use energy. You can use a sub weapon and a basic attack in the same turn. Each character also has access to an Action Trigger, a special attack for each character that consumes a larger amount of energy. The last combat ability is called Hyper Mode and it gives each character a transformation with access to more power abilities. Using this does not cost any energy.
Music
I really enjoyed the music in this game. Below are some of my favorite tracks from the OST.
What Did I Think About it?
It has probably been at least 10 or more years since I finished it, but I enjoyed it. I really liked the music and the characters. The story was also pretty good in my opinion with a pretty good twist in it. I’d definitely recommend giving the game a try if you like the Mega Man series and RPGs. It’s definitely an enjoyable stand alone game that you can pick up without having to have prior exposure to the Mega Man X series. I like that each character was unique in their attacks and how they play. Being able to swap out characters during combat was also a great addition. I think the only complaint I have about the game is that the enemy encounters happen a bit more frequently then I would like from what I remember.
Conclusion
Unfortunately this is one of those games that never got a digital version released. The only way to play is if you’ve got the original consoles it was released on or if you emulate it. I definitely think it’s a game worth playing. Have you heard of or ever played this game? What’s a game from the Game Cube or PS2 that you thing was overlooked or not played enough? As always thank you all for reading!
