One of the many games I’ve added to my backlog is Unicorn overlord. As you all know my backlog is full of RPGs so it takes a bit to work my way through games.

Combat

Combat is similar to the Fire Emblem series, with some differences. Instead of being turn based with the moving of your units, like Fire Emblem, Unicorn Overlord is real time. Enemies can make movement towards you so you’ll need to stay aware of your enemy movements. I’m still working on getting used to the combat. It’s not often I play strategy games with real time combat.

The Overworld

I think that the overworld/traveling is pretty cool. While traveling you can collect resources, take on side missions, and visit towns to buy from shops. While traveling you’ll encounter areas where hostile enemies have spawned. These enemies will continue to show up until you capture the area. Some of these areas are tied to the main story, while others are tied to side quests.

My Thoughts

The only criticism that I have is that I almost missed a mission because I kept being followed by someone that I had assumed was an enemy. It turns out they just wanted to talk to me and they ended up giving me a side quest. I would have like there to have been some indicator like the other side quests use.

I really like the different formations you can have in the different parties when in a combat mission. Experimenting with the formations as well as making use of different party members is defintely something I need to work on.

Unit formation

So far the side quests have been pretty good. From what I’ve done so far, they’re good at connecting to impact from the main events of the story.

Conclusion

If you’ve played Unicorn Overlord, how did you like the game. How did it compare to other similar games that you’ve played? As always thank you all for reading! If you’d like to follow me on social media, I have a BlueSky account!

You should run into most of the overworld enemies. If you kill them, you get a little honour.
