Intro
As I’ve cruised around the internet I always seem to come across comments where people are upset that someone dislikes a game that they like. Usually you see these types of comments in regards to classic games but they apply to modern games as well. There are always a group of gamers that don’t take to kindly to any type of criticism towards certain games as well as those that go after people for liking games that others don’t like. I’ll touch briefly on classic games then move onto modern games while providing one game example for each.
Classic
A good example of this is Final Fantasy VII. There is always a group of people that seem to be quick to respond when you mention that you do not like the game. I was watching someone play Final Fantasy VII Remake a couple of weeks ago and in the comments someone had mentioned that they did not like the original. People responded with things like you did not understand the game or you should play it again. Why is it when someone says that they did not like a specific game that you did, you feel the need to tell them to play it again? If they didn’t like it then they just didn’t like it. You can agree to disagree but there isn’t a reason to judge someone or tell someone they are wrong for not liking a game that you do.
People should be able to freely criticize classic games because they are giving their valid opinion on that specific game. I feel like sometimes people put certain games on a pedestal and you can never dislike them or there must be something wrong with you. I’m currently playing Final Fantasy VII and I honestly enjoy V and I better right now. This is my opinion, you don’t have to change my mind. Me not liking it doesn’t automatically mean that you can’t like it anymore. If you think it’s the best game ever than you have every right to do so. That’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. As a community we shouldn’t feel the need to chastise or question the dislike someone has for a game simply because we might have enjoyed it. This also applies to modern gamed that have come out.
Modern
An example of a modern game is Cyberpunk 2077. Let’s be honest on ps4 and Xbox One at launch these games were broken. Does this mean that everyone had a problem, no some people didn’t experience issues. What I’m not okay with is that when someone criticizes Cyberpunk 2077, they’re told that they shouldn’t have expected it to run on dated hardware. You also get other responses like that never happened to me. Just because you didn’t experience problems someone else did doesn’t automatically invalidate their criticism, it’s still valid. As consumers of products we should be able to criticize unfinished or broken products without some kind of retribution from those that enjoyed said product. Here’s an example exchange:
The original poster was the one with the blurred out profile where they voiced their dislike for the game. In response this other person asked them if they finished the game. These two obviously have a difference in opinion as one has had bugs and another hasn’t. It’s fine to share your different experiences. The problem arises when you tell someone to buy a better computer or system. This immediately tries to invalidate their criticism of the game.
I’d also like to say that people that criticize and dislike games can be the exact same way. I’ve seen where people have said that they enjoy a certain game and people respond with something like it’s not a good game. Just because you dislike a game does not mean that you need to point out things that you perceive as flaws to those that like it. Just because someone likes a game that you don’t does not mean you have to try to change their opinion on the game.
Conclusion
In conclusion we should respect the opinions of our fellow gamers. Not everyone is going to like the same games that you do. There have been people that dislike games that I really enjoy and I respect their opinions. I go on with my day and still like the game. Obviously you can still have conversations about your difference in opinions as long as everyone involved is respectful. We should never judge someone for liking or disliking a game. I hope that I did not offend anyone as that was not my intention. As always thank you for reading and be sure to follow my twitter as well as the blog to stay updated with my content.
