As more and more conversations are being had about a Nintendo a Switch Successor, I decided to think about what I’d like to see from a new console. It’s hard to believe, but the original Nintendo Switch released back in 2017.
Better Joy Cons
I know I’m not the only one that’s had issues with the Switch Joy-Cons. I mainly use a controller now for my Switch since the controllers have given me so many issues. My right one had drift issues and I got that one fixed. My right one now struggles to connect sometimes. At this point I think they’ve fixed the problem with newer ones, but in the future they could definitely be a bit better and more durable.
Better Optimization/Performance/Hardware
There have been several games with performance issues from companies like Game Freak, Atlus, and Marvelous. From Atlus I’m talking about SMT V. It wasn’t a bad experience, but there were noticeable frame drops present throughout the game even while docked. From Game Freak there was Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, with inconsistent performance. I think Game Freaks issue was more so on the side of needing a longer development time. Marvelous had Rune Factory 5 which was riddled with frequent frame drops. This brings up the question of is it the hardware or is it more of an issue with the developers? You have games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom that I’ve experienced zero issues with. Any time a game is available on multiple platforms, I usually don’t get the Switch version since I’m unsure on the performance on the system.
Better Battery Life
I don’t know about the newer systems, but with my Switch the battery doesn’t seem to last long. I usually play it docked because if I was playing something like Pokemon or Zelda, I’d have to plug it in to charge after about an hour or a hour and a half. Would it be possible to introduce a performance mode that could potentially sacrifice graphics for more battery life? It could just be my system though.
More Touchscreen Utilization
I find myself forgetting that the Switch even has a touchscreen. I can’t even count the number of games that actually utilize the touchscreen. It’s definitely a missed opportunity. I miss games like Pokémon Ranger where the touchscreen was tied to the game play. If they did end up utilizing it more, I’d like to see an included stylus. I can’t think of that many games that fully utilize the touchscreen. The only issue I can foresee is not being able to dock and play a game that mainly uses the touchscreen on a TV.
Conclusion
Those are just a few of the things I’d like to see from Nintendo’s next console. I’m interested in seeing what improvements they make with a new console. What are some of the things you’d like to see from Nintendo’s next console? As always thanks for reading!

Jul 20, 2024 11:57 pmI agree with all this . I want more games to actually use the joycons in creative ways , like the Wii remotes or the stylus of the ds. I want some more innovative play styles . Like wario shake or Pokemon Ranger . I’m really hoping the next generation delivers . I’m not super into graphics as I already own an Xbox , but I look to Nintendo for fun and out of the box playstyles , plus good rpgs

Jul 21, 2024 12:03 amI was a big fan of the wii remotes. I’d like to see more innovative play styles as well. I feel like there was more utilization with the Nintendo DS

Jul 21, 2024 12:05 amYes totally . My fiancé and I have so many ds and 3ds games between both of us . The consoles just felt nice and were so portable . Probably one of Nintendo’s Golden age to be honest .

Aug 01, 2024 10:19 amI think the frame rates depend on the developer and the engine used to run the game. However, if the Switch or Switch 2 *did* have better hardware it could compensate for that. heh.
Battery life for handhelds devices like that are usually not great. Steam Deck and ROG Ally when on performance mode have similar battery lifespans. If you put it in the power saving or whatever it lasts a lot longer, but you may be locked to 30 fps or something. I think it’s possible, considering the Ally X has improved battery life, but I dunno if htat would make the Switch 2 chunkier or something.

Aug 01, 2024 12:05 pmYeah it’s hard to tell sometimes of it’s the Switch or just a result of poor optimization from the developers.
I wouldn’t mind the Switch 2 being a bit bigger if it meant an improved battery life.

Aug 07, 2024 5:21 amPersonally? Backwards compatibility with physical games is the only thing I care strongly about.
And as a side note, they really should call it a Super Nintendo Switch, for old times sake.

Aug 07, 2024 6:32 amBackwards compatability is definitely a must-have. If it doesn’t have that, I probably wouldn’t buy it for a few years

Sep 18, 2024 10:40 amBackwards compatibility and improved hardware/batteries are the two most important improvements (besides the Joy-Cons) Nintendo could make. The name Super Nintendo Switch (as mentioned by a commentor above) would be awesome! I wonder what the specs will be for Nintendo’s next console.
I would also love if Nintendo returned a service similar to the Virtual Console on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U where you could buy retro games once and own them forever, that would be amazing!

Sep 18, 2024 11:34 amYeah, the Virtual Console stuff was great. That was probably one of the most popular services. I know I bought a couple of games that way
