Recently there has been a resurgence in RPGs getting remakes and sequels. One series that I’d like to see this from is the Phantasy Star series. There’s currently Phantasy Star Online 2, but it has been a good number of years since a single player game in the series has been released. I often think back to several games in the series wanting to experience them again.
My Experience with the Phantasy Star Series
I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t played a lot of games in the series. I got into the series pretty late back when I owned a PlayStation Portable. As usual I was looking for some RPG recommendations and stumbled across Phantasy Star Portable. I found it for a good price at a local game store. I greatly enjoyed the game. The game has some great characters, plenty of customization options, as well as different endings. After that I found Phantasy Star Universe for the Xbox 360. I consider it as one of my favorite games.
The Phantasy Star series goes all the way back to 1987, with the first release being Phantasy Star on the Sega Master system. I haven’t gotten the chance to play the original yet, but it’s on my list. Three sequels were released afterwards, ending with Phantasy Star IV. After IV, the first iteration of Phantasy Star Online was released. As you can probably tell by the title, this was an online multiplayer game.
When was the Last Single Player Game?
The last single player game in the series was released in 2014. The game released was Phantasy Star Nova. You might not have known this as it was only released in Japan and Asia. The means the last game that got a wider translation was Phantasy Star Portable 2 back in 2009. I didn’t realize it had been that long until I started looking some games up. Phantasy Star Online 2 launched in 2012, but only became widely available on 2020.
If you’re going back and playing some of the games in this series I would highly recommend playing Phantasy Star Universe before Portable or Portable 2. There are characters as well as references to certain events as Universe take place chronologically before the other two.
I often think back to the series and wonder if SEGA will ever revisit the series with a new single player game. I’m doubtful since their online game most likely draws in a significant amount of money. I’m almost certain that a new game will never happen, but perhaps a remaster in the future. I think one of the main reasons I like the series so much is that it’s a space RPG where you can go to different planets. As a little extra, the main theme for Phantasy Star Portable is awesome.
Conclusion
What’s one game series you’d like a new game for? Any series you’d like to see get remastered? Custom Robo is another series I’d like to return. As always thank you all for reading. I know this post is a little short, but the next one will be a bit longer. As always thank you all for reading!

I think Half Life e is one of the most wanted sequels. I wish a lot of companies would back off live service games unless they’ll do them right.
