I recently started playing Yakuza Like a Dragon and I wanted to share my first impressions. This post won’t be too long since I’m in chapter 4 currently.
Game Play
Right now I’m still a little iffy on the game play, specifically the combat. The combat isn’t bad but I am a little confused currently. What confuses me is the difference in strength with enemies as well as their health. It feels like some enemies of the same level sometimes go down really easy and other times they don’t. I know each enemy is different but the levels just seem a little off. I’m beating enemies the same level as me in one attack sequence.
Another downside of the game play currently are the prices in stores. I’m in chapter 4 and this store has items that are pretty expensive right now. There was one store that was selling stuff for like 100,000 Yen. There is probably an easy way to get money that i haven’t come cross yet, but it’s a little much right now.
Despite what I have said above I do enjoy the combat. The enemies transforming because of Kasuga’s imagination is pretty funny. I like the looks of the team up attacks.
Story
The story as of now is pretty good. I liked that you get to know about the different characters’ backstories and how they ended up in their current situations. I’m looking forward to how the story will continue to unfold. I like that for some backstory on characters you see a cut-scene. It’s better to show sometimes than to just tell.
Mini Games & Side Quests
It looks like there are a lot of mini games that you can do. The first one that you come across is collecting cans while riding a bike. You can ram others to take their cans and it is a lot of fun. Some other games are available via arcades. One such game is Virtua Fighter. It mimics you being in an arcade which is pretty cool. I’m sure there are plenty of more mini games for me to find considering I’m still in chapter 4.
Once you get to chapter 4 you can start getting side quests. I have to say that the side quests are pretty unique. One has you catching someone who’s been urinating in public. Can’t say it’s something I’ve done in a game until now.
Conclusion
I think Yakuza Like a Dragon is a pretty good game as of now. The combat isn’t my favorite currently, but hopefully things become a little clearer to me as I continue to play. What do you think of Yakuza Like a Dragon’s combat? No spoilers please as I am still early in the game. As always thank you for reading!
