Monster Hunter World: An Amazing Adventure

Nergigante Monster Hunter World

Publisher: Capcom

Developer: Capcom

Platforms: PC, PlayStation, and Xbox

Release Date: January 2018

Introduction

Monster Hunter World was a game that I pre-ordered and I don’t regret that decision. I wasn’t sure what to expect as it had been years since I played a Monster Hunter title. I ended up having a lot of fun.

Story

The story of Monster Hunter World has you and others heading to a place called the New World. Along the way there you encounter an Elder Dragon which eventually leads you deep into the mysteries of the New World. I thought the story was quite enjoyable and delivered numerous hours of game play. The DLC Iceborne continues the story and adds more monsters. Since I have not played the DLC yet I’m only talking about the base game.

For the most part what will happen is that you’ll have main missions that you get that will progress the story. Sometimes to get these main missions you might have to freely explore to find tracks of a monster. Main missions can only be done once unless you fail them or in the case of a special mission or two.

Graphics

One of the biggest things that stands out in Monster Hunter World are the amazing graphics. Everything looks great and I don’t think I have encountered any graphical issues the entire time I have played.

The in game graphics looked just as good as the cutscenes. I first played the game on the ps4 where you could not change graphics, but it still looked great and I didn’t experience any issues. If you play on the ps4 Pro or ps5 you can prioritize graphics, prioritize frame rate, or prioritize resolution. I don’t own an Xbox so I’ll share a video from Digital Foundry that covers these settings.

Features

Monster Hunter World is a great way for newcomers to get into the series. There are plenty of tutorials to help you learn controls and get used to new features. Monster Hunter World has fourteen different weapons to accommodate many different play styles. Anytime you want to learn how to use a new weapon, simply head to the training area. Each weapon has its own combos to explore so be sure to experiment.

One of the features introduced in Monster Hunter World are territory disputes. These can occur at any time while hunting out in the field. Two or more monsters may began fighting each other if they come into contact with each other. Things can get a little hectic but the situation can be used to your advantage. While fighting the monsters deal damage to each other, potentially making your hunt easier.

A territory dispute I came across

Another new feature introduced is the Slinger. The Slinger is a slingshot that fires many different items that you can either craft or find out in the field. These items help you when you’re in a pinch or cause the environment to damage a monster. One type of ammo is called a flashbug. Loading it into the Slinger and shooting it at a monster will temporarily blind them.

The crafting in Monster Hunter World is nicely organized and can be done in the field or at bases. One of the best parts of crafting items is if you try crafting something that requires an item you don’t have, if you have the materials it will jump to that item for you to craft it.

Other Activities

If you don’t feel up to doing a main quest or need to hunt some monsters for some new gear, investigations are the way to go. Investigations are missions that can be done for a set amount of times. The objectives can include hunting monsters, capturing monsters, or establishing camps. As you progress through the game more investigations will become available to you.

Another thing you can do are optional quests. Optional quests can be obtained by talking to characters that have yellow exclamation points above their head, I believe that some are also automatically added. What’s different about these quests is that they can be repeated after you’ve already completed them.

Gameplay

I’ve got some videos I recorded where one is a hunt that I did and the other is a capture quest that I did. They’re both a little long so if you don’t know what the game looks like or how it plays feel free to skim through them.

Capturing Tobi Kadachi
Hunting a Bazelgeuse

Conclusion

Monster Hunter World is a great game that I would highly recommend. I would however not recommend it to people looking for shorter games as you can spend a lot of hours on the game. There are plenty of activities to do as well as a lot of weapons and armors to craft. If you run out of stuff to do in the base game then you can get the DLC Iceborne for even more story content. The DLC usually goes on sale a couple times a year.

As always thank you all for reading as well as your continued support. If you’ve played Monster Hunter World what was your favorite monster? What monster gave you the most trouble?

Fantastic!

Monster Hunter World is a fantastic game with little to no flaws. A great game for anyone looking to get into the Monster Hunter series for the first time or for experienced players. The only thing I disliked was the constant prompt to buy PlayStation Plus every time you boot up the game.
