Introduction

Soul Hackers 2 is a game that I never thought would exist. I remember playing Soul Hackers at least five or more years ago on my 3DS. I just randomly bought since at the time I was still new to the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Story

Explore a supernatural RPG with stylish summoners and dark dangers lurking under the neon lights of a cyberpunk Japan. It is up to Ringo, an agent of Aion, to save the world from apocalypse.

One thing to note is that you do not have to play the first Soul Hackers to play Soul Hackers 2. This game has it’s own story. I enjoyed the story and the direction that the game took. Being able to explore each character’s story was great.

Game Play

The game play is pretty straight forward. You have main missions as well as side quests that you can complete. Some side quests require certain conditions to unlock like progressing to a certain point in the game.

The combat is a bit different from the first game and other entries in the SMT series. This game does not use press turn combat like other games in the series. It uses something called Sabbaths. Essentially when you hit an enemy weakness, a count gets added to the stack. After all your characters have finished their turn, damage is dealt relative to the stack count. There are demons that have abilities that only activate during a Sabbath, such as healing the party relative to damage dealt.

Sabbaths

Other than Sabbaths, combat is simply turn based. Since the game does not use press turn combat, hitting an enemy with a skill that is not effective does not end your turn.

One thing you can do to alter the outcome of battles is upgrading your comp. When you upgrade your comp you can strengthen affinities, increase attributes, learn new skills, and more.

Music

I enjoyed the music. I thought the the opening was great. Every time I played the game I stopped to listen to the intro. Shin Megami Tensei Music is always good.

Likes

I like how easy Soul Hackers 2 makes tracking enemies. If you need a specific enemy for materials you can target it and an icon will pop up if that enemy will be encountered. The location of enemies is also shown as well as what they drop. This has been an issue in other games that I’ve played, but I’m glad that Soul Hackers 2 does not have this issue.

Dislikes

The main thing that I did not like about Soul Hackers 2 is the demon recruitment. In the previous Soul Hackers game, and other games in the SMT series, you could recruit demons during combat. The only way to recruit demons in this game is to encounter them while one of your demons is searching the map. This makes it harder trying to get certain demons since you don’t know what demon will appear. It’s also difficult since you don’t know the level of the demon that appears.

Conclusion

Soul Hackers 2 is a good game that I enjoyed playing. I think I ended up doing every side quest that was available. If you played Soul Hackers 2, how did you like it? If you want to talk spoilers feel free to @ or message me on Twitter. Let me know if you see any mistakes! Thanks for reading!

Good!

Soul Hackers 2 is a good game that lacks in certain areas. I did not like the change made to the demon recruitment. I can see what they were trying to do, but I think that it was a miss. I did enjoy the implementation of Sabbaths as well as the Comp upgrades.
